Angelise Joseph wears many hats. She's a single mom (and now grandma) with three grown children and two still at home. Born in Haiti, she grew up in South Florida before moving to Tampa Bay 18 years ago. Eight years ago, she began working as a barista at Sono Cafe, a branch of downtown's Mise en Place restaurant company located at the Tampa Museum of Art. That's where she began her love affair with cooking. Her ambition and skill have earned her a prominent role behind the scenes at Mise.

Tell me about your job.

I am a line cook at Mise en Place. I work the Garde Mange station at Mise en Place restaurant -- I prepare fresh salads and currently am in training on the sandwich station. I run the kitchen operations at the Mise Cafe at the Amalie Arena and I manage back of house operations, including cooking for our catering department.

What do you like about your job?

I love being able to meet and be a part of a team of a diverse group of people and trying out new dishes. I also get to serve people, which is what I love to do. I love the people I work with.

A lot of cooks grew up in the kitchen. Is that the same for you?

No. Growing up, I didn't really spend a lot of time in the kitchen until I had my kids. That's when ideas started popping in my head. I tried other jobs, but they weren't my passion. I started at Sono Cafe as a barista and as I was watching those people, I thought "I want to do that."

What do you do for fun or hobby?

I experiment with food, making new dishes. At the restaurant I have to follow recipes. At home I can just try anything. I also love to hang out with my kids.

Who's your hero and why?

(Mise en Place co-proprietor) Chef Marty. He has inspired me with his passion for cooking and believed in me, which has changed my life dramatically.

What do your recommend your visitors do for fun when they come to Tampa Bay?

I love Tampa Bay. Visit the Riverwalk. I love the Riverwalk. I love downtown Tampa and Channelside -- especially at night time. The buildings all light up -- it's beautiful. And stop by Mise en Place to have a glass of wine and a delicious meal!
