The Wizard of Oz has soaked into popular culture so completely that, even if they haven’t seen it themselves, most people know the film’s main beats by heart. So, it feels like our duty to say directly: you should watch it. To see Oz as if you’ve never heard of it before can give you a special thrill of discovery. They certainly don’t make them like this anymore. It’s a musical, a fantasy story, a kids’ flick, and a morality play about already having inside yourself the things you want from the outside world. But it’s also kind of a road-trip movie – Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion make friends and get up to some antics on the Yellow Brick Road. And it’s also kind of a disaster movie – the tornado scene was shocking, for the time. And the moment of transition between black & white and color is maybe the most iconic instant of film since they started adding sound. Even if you have seen it before, we encourage you to bring somebody who’s never seen The Wizard of Oz to the Theatre. You may find something new in it yourself.
