The Silent Clowns: Comedy Shorts

Tampa Theatre remains one of the only movie palaces in the world that can revive its original programming by presenting a silent film with live musical accompaniment on the theatre’s original 1926 Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. This summer, we are happy to announce a selection of silent comedy shorts: The Immigrant , a 1917 Charlie Chaplin short about his Tramp character making his way to America (and getting in trouble the whole time); Never Weaken , a 1921 Harold Lloyd comedy prominently featuring his patented brand of thrilling, madcap stunts; Big Business , a 1929 Laurel and Hardy short featuring the two as Christmas tree salesmen in an escalating war of vandalism; and One Week , a Buster Keaton classic about the construction of a house for his new bride (and the first film released made by Keaton on his own). Nationally renowned theatre organist Dr. Steven Ball — a familiar face to fans of our silent film presentations — will be traveling down from St. Louis once again for this very special afternoon of hijinks and hilarity, performing scores of his own creation. The program will be presented with a brief intermission. Immediately after the screening, retired USF film professor Harriet Deer will lead a short discussion and audience Q&A. The session is included with film admission.
