Directed by Steven Spielberg, but based on a story by George Lucas and a screenplay written by Lawrence Kasdan, the (later) co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark isn’t just a love letter to the two-fisted, block-jawed serial adventure heroes that Lucas and Spielberg loved watching as kids. It practically gets down on one knee and proposes marriage. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is witty, sly, a brilliant professor and dashing explorer with just the right touch of vulnerability for a romantic lead; Marion (Karen Allen) is a damsel in distress with steely nerves, a valid grudge and a hard right hook; and the movie pulls them around the (literal) map in individual episodes that all feed into one big story. It’s unabashedly a movie’s movie, and it’s the reason theatre seats have edges.
