Family Favorites: Spy Kids (2001)

1h 28m / PG / Action, Comedy, Family

Gregorio (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid Cortez (Carla Gugino) are international secret agents — at least, they used to be. Nowadays their jobs with the OSS (the Organization of Super Spies) involve consulting and shuffling paperwork more often than high-tech gadgets and clandestine ops. Once they got married and had kids — Carmen and her little brother Juni — they chose semi-retirement to shield their family from the dangers of their profession. But when the OSS tasks Gregorio and Ingrid with tracking down missing agents, who they suspect have been kidnapped by an evil children’s television host, the parents get kidnapped and all those plans change. Carmen and Juni will have to accept their real life, dodge the uncle who’s trying to keep them safe, and do their best to become super-spies themselves.

Writer/director Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Sin City) was inspired to make Spy Kids after meeting a fan who said his son, age six, loved Desperado (a fantastic film that’s very much not appropriate for six-year-olds). Attempting to make a movie for kids that felt like it had been written and directed by a kid, and using drawings from his own adolescence, he shot Spy Kids in just 48 days. In an era saturated with leather-jumpsuit, laser-grid sci-fi-espionage aesthetics, Spy Kids holds up as a true original and a cultural touchstone.
