For June, Big Picture is proud to bring you a selection of films that offer iconic representations of historic figures that have come to be integrated into the contemporary perspective of who those historic figures were — or which have, in some cases, subsumed other perspectives entirely. There’s no such thing as impartial history. Future generations will examine our present through their own unknowable filters and bend it to meet their own inscrutable goals. They say history repeats itself, first as tragedy and then as farce. But in between, history churns through all the other genres too.

The Passion of Joan of Arc, presented here with an original score performed live on the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ by Tampa Theatre's own Steven Ball, almost single-handedly creates the modern conception of the martyr Joan just eight years after she was canonized as a saint.
