Part of the Big Picture January series "New Year, New Wave".
FILM SYNOPSIS: 1h 30m / Not Rated / French, Drama, Comedy
For our final Big Picture title this month, we present Cléo from 5 to 7, the 1962 character drama written and directed by Agnès Varda, which spends its entire runtime from 5pm to 6:30pm on June 21 as the young singer Cléo anticipates receiving the results of her recent biopsy, which will confirm whether or not she has stomach cancer. A meditation on death, a sensitive portrayal of our very human fear of it and a clear-eyed reflection on its inevitability, Cléo from 5 to 7 establishes a blueprint for an entire genre of ground-level human drama, even setting aside what are now the aesthetic guidelines of New Wave itself. It’s a beautiful movie about whether beauty is even real. It begins and ends in the middle, like all lives do.
In French with English subtitles.
