Hey Sports Fans! Tony here to remind you that Tampa Bay is playing host to the American Poolplayers Association (APA) and its annual U.S. Amateur Pool Championship this weekend! This Championship will bring the top amateur poolplayers in the nation to the Bay Area and will be held at Strokers in Palm Harbor.
The championship consists of both Men’s and Women’s division competitions. The poolplayers qualified for this weekend’s tournament in various preliminary rounds held throughout the country in September. The women’s competition is comprised of 32 players, while the men’s has 128 competitors. The winner of each division competition will earn a berth in the U.S. Open Pro Championship next year, as well as a chance to defend their championship at the 2012 U.S. Amateur Pool Championship.
The competition will involve a double elimination tournament, race-to-7, with a maximum of five games of 8-Ball and eight games of 9-Ball. When the competition is down to just two, the match becomes single elimination race-to-11, with a maximum eight games of 8-ball and 13 games of 9-Ball.
The APA is based out of Lake Saint Louis, Mo. It is regarded as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, since it established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for amateur billiards.
