Who needs a car when you can get to dinner by boat? Just in time for getting outside on the Fourth of July, the City of Tampa has opened three boat docks and a kayak launch at Water Works Park just north of downtown. The park sits next to Ulele , one of Tampa Bay's newest and most popular restaurants. Tampa Bay Lightning (you may have heard of them -- they're in a little hockey tournament these days) owner Jeff Vinik got the profile treatment from the New York Times on Sunday (image above is from that story) -- with the emphasis on his vision for Tampa Bay's Channel District bordering his teams home ice, Amalie Arena . Vinik plans to invest $1 billion -- with an assist from Bill Gates' investment arm -- in 40 acres now dominated by parking lots and empty post-industrial...

First we had Bayshore Boulevard's 4.5 miles of unbroken pedestrian pathway. Then the Tampa Riverwalk's final major section opened in March, created another 2.5 miles of biking, running and walking space through the heart of the city. Now comes the newest addition to Tampa Bay's growing network of biking and pedestrian trails: The Selmon Greenway. The Greenway opened last weekend amidst the fanfare, hubbub and hoohaw of our first RiverFest. We'll forgive you if you missed your...

TripAdvisor users have ranked Tampa eBoats the top outdoor activity in Tampa Bay. We can understand why after reading review like this from Anna K. from Oakland, Calif.: We rented an eboat for 4 hours. We toured the bay, harbor, and river. The staff are awesome. Very friendly, funny, and helpful. They tell you all you need to know to drive your boat and give you a map. The boat is great and the sights are beautiful. In its first 100 days, Tampa Bay’s Coast Bike Share system has already racked up enough miles to nearly circle the globe. The for-profit system’s organizers say that as of March 16, Coast Bike Share had nearly 3,260 riders. Together, they pedaled almost 24,000 miles. The bulk of the riders – nearly 3,000 of them – are one-day riders who rent the bikes on the spot for quick trips of a couple miles. The rest are founding members or monthly subscribers. Coast has 300 of...

The final major segment of the Tampa Riverwalk will open to traffic at the end of this month. It will be the newest piece of Tampa Bay's embrace of the Hillsborough River, which flows through the middle of town and and meets the sea beneath the city's downtown skyscrapers. For nearly two centuries, the river was a working river -- with docks and industry right on the water's edge. Standing a few blocks inland, it was easy to forget the river was even there. But all that has...

Plenty of people paddle their way around Tampa Bay's sparkling waterfront. Now they can do it by pedal. Tampa Water Bike Co. , the newest addition to Tampa Bay's growing waterfront, is featured today in 83 Degrees , our local online magazine. Owners Dan and Amanda Fleischbein rent water bikes -- pontoon-mounted bikes with a pedal-powered propeller -- and biyaks -- kayaks riders pedal rather than paddle. The company works from the public docks outside the Tampa Convention Center and...
