Hey there gang.  We're back with more awesome Tampa Bay area events!  We are getting away from SEC basketball just for a second, but don't worry, we will be back soon!  This time we are talking about the 1st Annual Tampa Twilight Criterium, which I have heard described as "bicycling insanity!"

Here's the lowdown, for both spectators and riders -

For the Participants - The "Crit" course in Tampa includes several fast turns along paved and bricked roads. In the center of the crit course is Lykes Park. Lykes Park will feature a Wellness oriented festival for everyone in the family. The streets will be closed all day for the fast paced racing, but there is definitely something for everyone!

For the Spectators - A criterium, or crit, is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 km), often run on closed-off city centre streets. Race length can be determined by a total time or a number of laps, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses. Generally the event's duration (commonly one hour) is shorter than that of a traditional road race however, the average speed and intensity are appreciably higher. The winner is the first rider to cross the finish line without having been "lapped."

Events often have prizes (called primes, pronounced "preems", and are cash or gifts) for winning specific intermediate laps (for instance, every 10th lap). A bell is usually rung to announce to the riders that whoever wins the next lap, wins the prime.

And there you go...if that's not enough info for you, then head over to http://tampacrit.com to get the full scoop and see what you should definitely head out for this madness on two wheels!

It's next weekend (which works out great for all of you basketball fans who plan on going out to the SEC tournament), so you can bet I'll be out there for a while.  Drop a line and let me know if you plan on going!

As always, keep checking back for more great things to do in Tampa Bay, and updates about the SEC tournament.

See you on the course!
