Fishing in Florida was revolutionized in 1885 in Punta Rassa when W. H. Wood from New York caught the first tarpon using a rod and reel. Venturing to Florida became all the rage and sportsmen traveled by rail and ship from the Northeast, Midwest, and Europe in search of this new experience. Tarpon Tales and Sport Fishing in Early Florida examines the phenomena of sport fishing from the late 1800’s to the 1930’s on the west coast of Florida. While sitting in a Hemingway era fighting chair, a visitor’s fantasy of the “great catch” will be enhanced by vintage photographs, mounted fish, rods, Edward vom Hofe reels, lures, tackle, gear, nets and souvenir tarpon scales.

Now through January 3, the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) is hosting more than sixty images of microscopic crystals of Aspirin® and Tylenol® doped with coffees, teas, wines, beers and spirits, over the counter pharmaceuticals, and tropical fruit extracts. The exhibition is called “Art in Science -- Science in Art,” and was created by acclaimed “Art Microscopist” T. H. Saunders.
The art pieces are large canvas prints of tiny crystal formations captured using high definition photography and precision optics microscopes. Saunders modifies the crystal growth to develop spectacular patterns.
The actual crystals are no larger than the point of a pin and are recorded using cross-polarization lighting techniques. These techniques cause the natural crystals to radiate dazzling colors – Saunders does not use any form of computer alteration. These spectacular prints, thousands of times larger than the original crystal, are so abstract that they invoke your imagination to see fanciful visions.
Saunders collections include the “Art of Science,” “Art of Medicine,” “Art of Coffee & Tea,” “Under the Influence,” “Tropical Fruits,” “The Vicarious Bootleggers Collection,” (actual images of wines from an alleged “Al Capone era” bootlegger) and “The Eyes Have It Collection” (ophthalmology medications).
Saunders divides his time between Florida and Nova Scotia, where he works as a global business development advisor, principal of an international technology search and commercialization group and Chairman and CEO of technology companies. He also serves on boards of corporate and non-profit entities, and has served in Executive, Corporate, U.S. Congressional, Government Executive Branch and White House appointments.
The artist utilizes his imagery in the promotion of fund-raising events for universities, foundations, civic organizations and worthy causes.
“Art in Science – Science in Art” is on display in the MOSI Arc Gallery until October 3. Admission to the Arc Gallery is included with MOSI admission. For more information on MOSI and the Arc Gallery, please visit www.mosi.org.
Saunders Limited Edition Image sales, benefiting MOSI, The Focus on Females Education Foundation, Inc. and the Zielinski Singers Choral, can be purchased through the MOSI Gift Shop.
