It’s easy to see why Tampa Bay is the perfect fit for the FIFA World Cup. Not only is Tampa Bay the second most populated region in Florida, but it’s also the 19th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.  Home to Tampa International Airport (TIA), our main airport is able to accommodate over 17 million passengers per year, with an estimated 25 million passengers expected by 2020.  Tampa International Airport has been recognized as the third best airport in the world by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, and IATA Skytrax named TIA as the number two airport in North America in 2003.

The FIFA World Cup is an international soccer competition in which 32 teams of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) compete.  The tournament is held every four years, and Tampa Bay has been chosen as one of the finalist cities for the 2018/2022 competition.  An estimated 36 billion people worldwide watch the FIFA World Cup, making it the most-viewed sporting event in the world.  The last United States-hosted FIFA World Cup event occurred in 1994, and holds the record for the highest-attended World Cup event in history.
